Are you looking for answers or inner peace? Almost twenty years ago I was struggling to find my way in life just like many other people. I was in a job I couldn't stand and that hardly paid the bills. I was facing my fortieth birthday, trying to be a good father, good husband, good person. I had a son and daughter and a beautiful wife and lived in rural Maine where life can be hard, especially making a living and surviving those long winters.

Despite the blessings in my life, I was feeling the strain and felt that something was missing. I dealt with angry people on a daily basis. It just didn't suit my personality. I was a shy, retiring person, who avoided conflict at all costs. Parts of my life were good, but other parts were terrible and needed work.

I asked myself, "How did I get here and how do I get where I want to be - after I figure out where that is?"

Life was wearing me down and I knew I had to make some changes. Where was the happiness, joy, fulfillment? What was the purpose of life and where was there meaning in life? I had read some

                              self improvement books, had learned how to meditate, studied self hypnosis, etc.
           But I was still at a crossroads in life and didn't know where to turn.

Since I had studied self hypnosis and read about automatic writing, I decided to give it a try and to ask my inner self, my subconscious mind, the hidden me, if you will, what I should do next. I was seeking guidance.

We are told that all the answers are within us, but how do you find them? I felt confused and frustrated and knew there must be more that I could be doing in the world and for personal fulfillment.

I sat in a chair in my living room and relaxed myself and began the process.

While I distracted my conscious mind, I turned control of my right hand over to my subconscious. I didn't even know if it would work or what I was getting into, but I was desperate, I knew my life had to change and was finally ready to admit that the changes might include leaving old paths and ways behind, the ones that weren't working anyway.

As I sat and waited, my hand began to write. Because our subconscious is child like, it often communicates as a child would. When I looked down on the paper, there was a big "B", a drawing of a train engine and the letters, "hyp." I had asked what I should do with my life, what I could do that would give it more meaning and what I, Wil Langford, was meant to be doing in the world.

My subconscious had told me to be trained in hypnosis. At the time, I didn't have any interest in other people's problems or helping others. I was a kind enough person and would lend a stranger or neighbor a helping hand when the opportunity presented itself, but I didn't get very involved in other people's lives. I certainly never pictured myself as a therapist. So what did, "B trained hyp (nosis)" really mean? What did I know deep inside that I hadn't consciously realized about myself? Was this messsage merely from my subconscious mind or was there an even greater source of knowledge that I had accidentally tapped into?

I decided to look into it and found classes in hypnosis that were offered by the National Guild of Hypnotists. I met therapists, doctors, nurses, social workers, all kinds of people in the helping and healing professions. But throughout the classes, as I learned the lessons and became a certified hypnotherapist with advanced certification, I still couldn't picture myself helping people to solve their problems, much less to one day help them to solve the biggest mystery and problem of all.

But after the classes and some clinical experience right in the classes, I realized that I liked helping people, in fact, I liked it a lot. I quit my job as a tax assessor, studied bio-feedback so that I could help clients to monitor their relaxation and depth of hypnosis, and opened an office in Bangor, Maine, where I began to help people who came to me with all kinds of problems, usually behavioral problems like smoking or overeating.

While weight loss and smoking cessation were the bulk of my work, I also helped some clients with a variety of problems. The more I worked with them the more convinced I became that the biggest problem we each have in life is the struggle within ourselves. I learned about the parts of human consciousness and even talked to them when helping my clients.

Then my life changed again. My children were grown and I was divorced, still living in Maine, but no longer a therapist, I began to have mystical experiences, life changing experiences as I meditated and walked in the hills and mountains of Maine. My experiences led to an even deeper understanding of the parts of human consciousness and ways that I could once again help my fellow travelers in life.

I wrote, "Your Loved Ones, Yourself; Finding and Raising the Family Within." I now regularly communicate with all the parts of my own consciousness and help others to do the same within their own inner family of parts, where they find guidance and knowledge that they never knew existed within them.

There have been several times in my life when I made major changes or turned in new directions. Each time, I got guidance from within. I developed a method for finding guidance and living a more fulfilling and happier life that is based on the five "A's"

 
 

The Five "A's," YOUR Pathway to Happiness and Fulfillment


acknowledgment - attunement - awareness - acceptance - action

What is the purpose of life? Why am I here? Why aren't I happier or more successful? Why is my life so hard?

Have you ever asked any of those questions? I asked each one of them more than once in my life and finally found the answer to each one after many years. My journey of discovery was lonely, painful, frightening, but eventually illuminating and fulfilling. Along the way, I learned and used the five A's.

I was guided by higher intelligence that has gone by many names throughout history. I came to know it as my own higher self, and eventually, after it revealed itself to me in a mystical experience and led me to an explanation of its existence, I came to call it my "Loved Ones." Throughout my life I have been a clinical hypnotherapist, integrated energy therapist, Siddha Yoga meditator, author, and meditation guide. Each experience was part of a plan and pathway and I now realize that I had the perfect life to help me to be the man I was meant to be. If you gain nothing else from your contact with me, I hope that you gain at least this one thing. I hope that you come to realize that you have also had a perfect life. We live in a perfect world.

How can this world and the human beings in it be perfect, you ask? We are perfectly human, just as we are meant to be. Success and failure are just two ends of the same stick. From the standpoint of consciousness, life is about the experience itself, not about success or failure, because to live and experience everything is its goal. There can be no success without failure and no hot without cold.

For instance, when we fall down, we say we stumbled. It is considered an accident and a mistake, especially if it hurts. But when a meteor falls to earth, even a large and destructive one, scientists don't say that the universe failed, they say that gravity worked. Stumbling and falling are as much a part of being human as running and leaping, and we learn from both experiences. No one ever learned to walk or to appreciate walking, without stumbling and falling.

Since the world is perfect, there is also a perfect plan for your life and a purpose for your life. The purpose for all lives is the experience of living and the maturing of consciousness. While consciousness itself is maturing it does so one individual at a time. Within each individual there are three parts of consciousness. There is the subconscious mind, the conscious mind, and higher self (the Loved Ones I mentioned before).

How do you find the purpose of your life and start to live it? Every heartbeat, step, stumble, or experience you have had up until now has led you to this moment, so you have been on the path that led you to finding your purpose in life. Now you are here. Your Loved Ones are a built in guide, like loving parents they will guide the subconscious and conscious mind, but first you must acknowledge them. Once you acknowledge the Loved Ones, you must attune yourself to them, so that you can receive their guidance.

Once you acknowledge and attune, it is time to be aware, because you will receive guidance in many ways. It is amazing how lives change when we finally get on the right track and tune in to our own higher intelligence. But just being aware isn't enough, because information is useless unless it is used for the purpose it was given. Therefore, whatever your life purpose may be, you must eventually accept it. For some of us, that isn't always easy, but it is the only way.

Once you accept that message and your purpose in life, it is time to take action. Doors will open and new opportunities will present themselves. You may be amazed at how things fall into place. You may not want to follow your life's purpose, but until you do, you will never know true satisfaction and lasting happiness in life.

What is Attunement and How Does it Work

Without getting too technical, let's start with everything and narrow it down. First of all, scientists tell us that everything in the universe is vibrating. Each thing, including living things and even people, has a specific frequency that they vibrate on, like radio waves. It is because everything is made of tiny particles. You probably remember studying atoms when you were in school. Everything is made of atoms and atoms are made of particles called sub-atomic particles. Those particles, and the atoms they make, are in constant motion because they have an electro magnetic charge.

Now let's talk about consciousness. Simply put, consciousness is intelligence that is aware of itself. Another way to think about consciousness is that it is a thought that thinks about thoughts and all the thoughts in the universe. Your thoughts and my thoughts are part of consciousness. If you were to take our consciousness out of our bodies, what would we have left? The body is just flesh and bones, it is our thoughts that make us who and what we are. We are our thoughts, or consciousness, but we have a body.

So your thoughts are part of consciousness and you can think into and out of that giant repository of thoughts. This certainly isn't my own original idea. It has been part of some of the great teachings of all time and the smartest and most successful people in the world use this great wealth of thoughts to solve problems and invent the many wonderful things we use today. It isn't exclusive to them, it is available to anyone who can find the right frequency that those thoughts vibrate on.

Consciousness is in everything and everywhere, including within those atoms that make everything in the world. It is the consciousness that directs each particle in the universe to behave the way that it does, so consciousness is the creative force in the universe, in fact, many even believe that it is everything, both the intelligence that pilots the particle and the particle itself. Therefore, since you think into that same consciousness, your thoughts may influence the particles and the material world.

That is one of the most important things a human being can ever know, so let's say it again in a slightly different way to make sure you understand it completely. Your thoughts are part of consciousness and consciousness controls all the little particles that make our world. Therefore, your thoughts have the potential to influence those particles and to change their order in some way. Your thoughts do have the ability to change your environment and even your body in some ways, but it takes skill and practice and knowledge to do it successfully.

Napoleon Hill became very successful by studying other successful men and then emulating their methods. He wrote the most famous and widely read of all guides to success, and is still considered one of the first and best of the success trainers. In his landmark achievement, the book, “Think and Grow Rich,” he wrote, “A genius is a man who has discovered how to increase the intensity of thought to a point where he can freely communicate with sources of knowledge not available through the ordinary rate of thought”.

What sources of knowledge was he writing about? Higher consciousness is available to anyone who takes the time to learn how to increase the intensity of his or her thought, and the good news is that you do not have to be a genius to do so. Some people are born with the gift so they are called creative geniuses, while others learn how to tap into that universal knowledge through work and practice.

The greatest inventor of all time may have been Thomas Edison. He patented over 1,000 things in his life including items we use everyday, like the light bulb. He was considered a genius, but what many do not realize is that he was a hard worker and very organized. He also took frequent naps. While he slept, he tapped into the universal consciousness, the higher self. He would think about a problem and then take one of his famous naps, and many times, he would awaken with the solution to the problem.

Here is what he said about that great source of knowledge that is available to anyone... “Ideas come from space. This may seem impossible and hard to believe but it’s true. Ideas come from out of space.” Of course, he meant the space or thin air all around us and even through us. In other words, he learned how to reach out with his mind and to have solutions come to him or to find them in what he called, "...out of space."

Some people call these gifts that people receive in the form of solutions to problems, or thoughts that seem to come from out of the blue, intuition. Here is what one of the most famous thinkers and problem solvers of all time had to say about intuition. While we are talking about great thinkers, inventors, and problem solvers, we can't leave out Albert Einstein. He was perhaps the most famous genius and problem solver of all time. It was Albert Einstein who finally figured out how our world is made, the mystery of Time and Space that he called his “Theory of Relativity,” a problem many scientists had grappled with for centuries. Here is what he said about intuition... “The only really valuable thing is intuition.”

It isn't just a few people who have the ability to use their intuition, to access that higher consciousness, or higher self. According to Napoleon Hill, the man who made a career of studying successful people, “I began to make inquiries of the hundreds of successful men who collaborated with me in the organization of the science of success, and discovered that each of them had received guidance from unknown sources, although many of them were reluctant to admit this discovery.”

I am no Napoleon Hill, but I have worked with hundreds of people as a clinical hypnotherapist, integrated energy therapist, meditation teacher, and guide and I have worked with the three parts of consciousness that each of us is made of, the source of that guidance that Napoleon Hill wrote about. I helped people to find happiness and many of them succeeded at getting what they wanted. Along the way I learned some important things about happiness, success, and getting what we want.

The real secret to happiness and success is not getting what you want by thinking about it. The key to happiness is being in tune and part of the great plan of the universe, a plan that has a place and a part in it for you. Feeling that you fit into the grand scheme and that you are a positive force in the world, brings satisfaction. Knowing that you are on the right track is more important than thinking you control the world with your mind. The famous men mentioned above had satisfying lives because they found their place and purpose in life. There is a path and purpose for everything and everyone, including you. If you think about it a little, you'll see what I mean.

Everything in the universe has a path that it follows. The planets are all on a specific orbit that keeps them close to the sun, but not too close. They spin through space at thousands of miles per hour without colliding. The atoms in your body each follow a path that keeps them together, but not too close. There is an order to the universe that is controlled by a higher intelligence, not the conscious thoughts of human beings.

So how could you safely change the path you are on, the path that will affect many other lives, without knowing what the universe has planned for you? The answer is, you can't do it safely. If we all could get what we wanted, just by our conscious thoughts, without knowing the universal plan, the world would be in total chaos. If your life isn't working out, if the world seems to be working against you, maybe it is because you are just not on the right path. In other words, you haven't seen the road map, but you have already started the trip.

By using the 5 A's you can find that path that you are meant to follow...

Many People Are Good Fliers but Lousy Radio Operators
An Example of a Need for Attunement

The above statement may seem a little confusing to you, but let me explain what I mean. Many people try very hard in life and manage to do some things well, but still fail to succeed or to be as successful as they could be. The reason is that success takes more than just hard work or desire. Along with planning, it also takes directions, or being on the right path to success.

A good example of what I am talking about is the story of the famous American Aviator, Amelia Earhart. In the early part of the twentieth century, not many women were flying airplanes and even fewer were setting records, but Amelia Earhart did just that. Despite her experience and flying skill, Amelia Earhart disappeared during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe.

Amelia Earhart logged many thousands of miles as a pilot. She wrote best selling books, toured and lectured, and was a role model to millions of women. She was successful at many things, except one, and that may be the reason why she eventually died during one of her record setting attempts.

The reason Amelia Earhart got lost was because she didn't know how to use her radio well. She was a good flier but not so good at operating a radio, especially how to use the radio to get a fix on position. Amelia Earhart wasn't as well trained at finding her way as she needed to be. While she tried to find her way over the Pacific Ocean she spoke to radio operators on a Coast Guard ship who could have helped her, but she didn't know how to use her radio.

If she could have tuned it to one frequency and stayed on that frequency, that radio beam, the people on the Coast Guard Cutter could have guided her to safety. They could have guided her to the island she was trying to land on. But she was unfamiliar with local frequencies, in other words, she wasn't tuned in properly.

The reason a lot of people are lost is because they don't know how to tune their minds to the right frequency and get help from their own higher intelligence. With our minds, we humans can reach out across time and space and dimensions, but we have to know how. That is what attunement is.

The great masters have tried to teach that. Very few people in life ever become a great radio operator and very few become a great meditator or consciousness explorer. But now there is an opportunity to do just that, because of the shift in consciousness and because there are teachers.

Our thoughts are powerful and it is possible to use them to tap into universal consciousness, to find out what the plan is and how you fit into it, but you must be on the same frequency that the universal mind is on, and that is attunement. Tuning into that consciousness, the repository of all thoughts is possible. That is what Napoleon Hill, Einstein, and Edison were all talking about. They had incredibly successful lives, but they were still just human beings, like you and I.

You will think about what you hear and decide whether you accept it, and finally, based on that decision to accept it or reject it, you will act on it. Those are the five A's.

We contact our higher self through our own subconscious mind. The way to make the subconscious more accessible is by entering the alpha brain wave state. The best way to stimulate alpha brain waves and to eliminate the distractions of the conscious mind is to meditate or to go into focused awareness or even, hypnosis. Guided meditation is an excellent way to reach the Alpha state.

Acknowledgment means acknowledging the existence of your own higher self and the three parts of consciousness. It also means reaching out. Higher intelligence will usually not lead you in life unless you ask for direction, but if you do reach out you will not be disappointed. There are many teachings throughout history and different belief systems and cultures refer to this, but perhaps it is best explained by these two simple statements, “When a pupil is ready, a teacher will appear.” “Ask and it shall be given, seek and ye shall find.”

Attunement means tuning into that higher self through the subconscious mind and meditation.

Awareness means paying attention to signs and guidance from the higher self that will come as a result of your attunement and asking for guidance.

Acceptance of the lessons and guidance you receive is the only way that you and the world can benefit from them.

ACTION! Acting on the lessons and guidance will make your life's purpose a reality.

Week One: Going Within...
First, we will use a guided meditation called, "Peacefilled Body and Spirit," to reach a place of perfect peace that exists within you. Once you reach that peaceful place, you will find that you can return as often as you like. When you are at total peace it is much easier to tune into the universal knowledge that is available to everyone. .: Thoughts on the Benefits of Meditating Outdoors

I have had some profound experiences while meditating outdoors and highly recommend that you meditate outdoors as often as possible. Use the sounds and feel of nature to help you to go deep within yourself and to calm and relax you.

The following is one of those experiences I wrote about before that can be explained with words, but is hard to understand. I was sitting on my back porch in Dixmont, Maine, facing the woods and the hill behind the house. I had started meditating and was listening to a gentle summer rain that was falling. I drifted deeper and deeper and felt a pleasant floating sensation. As I listened to the rain and lost myself in the experience, I began to hear individual raindrops and was aware of their path. Some were landing on the roof and dripping off the edge, others were falling on leaves and dripping off, still others were landing on the grass. I could feel and sense each one until I lost my sense of body and became the rain.

I felt and sensed each raindrop as my awareness spread out around me, increasing my field of perception and awareness exponentially. I was the rain, that is to say, my consciousness entered the rain. The only thought I had was, “I can feel and sense every raindrop!” Then the words inside me were gone, replaced by sensations, and I was the rain. I lost track of time and place and my physical being. In human terms it would be impossible to be aware of every raindrop in a rain shower, simultaneously, but in that state of perception, I believe I was, though I can hardly describe what it felt like. I can only tell you, meditate during a rainstorm, but don’t try to be the rain, just listen and enjoy the rhythm and natural music of the rain and someday you may have this experience as well. There is consciousness in the earth and in the rain, perhaps in all water.

Everything has a vibration and frequency. Each color, as we know from the section on waves and wavelength, has its own frequency. Just as there is consciousness throughout the earth I believe there is consciousness in color as well. I was once sitting on the edge of a cornfield in a small grove of trees, looking over the corn at the distant mountains in Baxter State Park. It was a beautiful early fall day in Maine. Many people come to Maine for the summer, but to me, the fall is the best time of year to experience Maine. The bugs are gone, the air is crisp, and the colors are spectacular. On that fall day the sky was a perfect shade of blue and the leaves were just starting to change their colors. The ripened corn waved in the breeze and the faraway mountains looked so close in the clean, clear air, it seemed as if I could reach out and touch them. I sat and leaned against a tree and staring up at the sky, began to let the earth slip away. With my eyes open I entered a dreamy state of meditation and lost contact with the earth. I felt the blue of the sky.

Normally we see colors, but I could feel the color as well, in fact, I became the color blue, as strange as that may sound. Neurosurgeons might describe it as synethesia. I felt the vibration of blue and all thoughts were stripped away until only a feeling remained. I was not the sky, I was the blue of the sky. Blue is exhilarating. Like the feeling of bliss I felt when I was the rain, being the color blue felt joyful, happy to be, a feeling of the absolute joy of being. These experiences have taught me that nature is the joyful existence of consciousness.

A tree is a feeling that Higher Consciousness feels. They are one and the same. Just as a thought or feeling exists in each one of us as a string of amino acids called a polypeptide, after we experience the thought or feeling, a tree exists as evidence of the feeling of being a tree as experienced by consciousness. A tree is both the affect and effect of a movement of consciousness. It is a combination of energy and intelligence. As Dr. Carl Jung once observed, “...sometimes a tree can tell you more than all the books." So can the sky and the rain. They can help you to reach places deep within yourself, and though you may not ever be able to find words that do justice to the experience, you will never be the same and a whole new world will open for you.

Nature will reach deep within you and stir up those dormant feelings hidden within your subconscious. When the Higher Self, as your Loved Ones, wants to reach you, it will find it much easier through nature where your Mother Earth resides, because though the rain and sky may be around you, Mother Earth and the joy of your own existence, reside within you. So for one method of communicating between the subconscious and Higher Self, your Loved Ones, I recommend meditation, particularly outdoors.
